Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Story://

When Joycelyn was told her therapy horse resided at Royal Pirate Stables, she was understandably terrified. The prestigious Hungarian establishment was home to some of the best horses and equestrians in the world. And who was she? A high-school dropout from halfway across the globe, caught in the hell of her own imagination ninety percent of the time.

And yet here she was, armed with a pocket of sugar-cubes and a Hungarian phrase-book, being ushered into the paddock by a grinning Leo. The man had been nothing but welcoming, as had most of the other staff she had met in her two days at RPS. It had been a long time since she had felt welcome outside of her own home.

She had seen photographs of her partnered horse, Red, but seeing the Obertauer in person was another matter all together. The stallion was practically glowing under the autumn sun, his brown eyes watching her curiously as Joycelyn settled beside a large oak tree nearby. She was surprised, however, when the buckskin proceeded to flop down next to her, tongue lolling into the grass.

"Oh, hello..."; The young woman chuckled, reaching out cautiously to stroke Red's cheek. She'd never been given the chance to make a connection such as this with any of her past lesson horses, and wasn’t quite certain how to react to the good-natured gesture. She supposed she should introduce herself.

"I’m Joycelyn, and I’m from rather far away.” She rested back against the bark, noting the way the stallion’s ears followed her as she spoke. “I’ve got, well, problems, I suppose, up here,” she tapped her head. “My doctor thought that maybe if I had someone to talk to, someone who wouldn’t judge and who I wouldn’t be afraid of, then maybe I’d feel better."

Red snuffled quietly, seeming to offer his affirmation.

“I was told that, by your owner, you’ve had a rough time of it too.” Joycelyn nodded towards his hooves, resting a gentle hand on his flank. “Maybe, since we both need some help sometimes, we could work together?"

Red nickered and rolled further onto his back, seeming to grin up at his partner.

"Well then, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship."

From the fence alongside the paddock, Leo smiled.
